Annual growth rings of a common hardwood species, Picea abies L., were investigated as a potential archive of past atmospheric Pb pollution. Wide distribution of trees in terrestrial settings and straightforward chronology are two advantages of this potential geochemical archive, but several processes described in the literature may obscure the trends in past Pb deposition. These confounding factors include, e.g., radial post-depositional mobility of Pb in xylem, and ecosystem acidification leading to higher bioavailability of Pb. One- to five-year annual wood increments were analyzed for Pb concentrations and 206Pb/207Pb ratios at Jezeri (JEZ), Uhlirska (UHL) and Na Lizu (LIZ), three sites in the Czech Republic, differing in atmospheric Pb loads. Three to four trees per site were included in the study. Distinct Pb concentration maxima between 1960 and 1990 at the two heavily polluted sites (JEZ and UHL) coincided with historical Pb emissions known from inventories of industrial production. No Pb concentration maxima were found at one site, LIZ, situated in a national park 150 km from major pollution sources. Spruce tree rings from JEZ, located just 5 km from coal-burning power stations, contained a large proportion of coal-derived Pb (a high-206Pb/207Pb ratio of 1.19). A coal-related maximum in 206Pb/207Pb in JEZ tree rings was found using two different analytical techniques, laser-ablation multi-collector ICP MS, and single-collector sector-field ICP MS. In a three-isotope graph (206Pb/207Pb vs. 208Pb/207Pb), tree-ring data plotted into the field of ombrotrophic (i.e., rain-fed) peat bogs, suggesting negligible contribution of bedrock-derived Pb in the xylem. We concluded that none of the potential confounding factors played a major role at our sites. Annual growth rings of P. abies in Central Europe faithfully recorded historical changes in atmospheric Pb depositions.  相似文献

This paper analyses flow and transport of pesticides from the unsaturated zone to groundwater so as to predict concentration of those contaminants in the Fucino Plain’s groundwater, by site investigations and numerical simulations. Pesticides were detected in surface water (peaks of 13 μg L−1) and groundwater (peaks of 0.37 μg L−1). Modelling tools made it possible to identify that pattern of precipitation, organic matter content, and root thickness are the key factors involved in vertical seepage of pesticides. Numerical simulations indicated that a significant fraction of contaminants is leached from the most surficial soil layers through runoff, while only a secondary fraction is mobilised towards groundwater. Likelihood of contaminating deep groundwater is fairly low, whereas surface waters show higher susceptibility. Results of the proposed conceptual hydrogeological model show that pesticides are more likely to be entrained by mixing of stream water with shallow groundwater in periods of high water exploitation from shallow wells.  相似文献

We study collective wind configurations produced by a number of massive stars, and obtain densities and expansion velocities of the stellar wind gas that is to be target, in this model, of hadronic interactions. We study the expected γ-ray emission from these regions, considering in an approximate way the effect of cosmic ray modulation. We compute secondary particle production (electrons from knock-on interactions and electrons and positrons from charged pion decay), and solve the loss equation with ionization, synchrotron, bremsstrahlung, inverse Compton, and expansion losses. We provide examples where configurations can produce sources for GLAST satellite, and the MAGIC, HESS, or VERITAS telescopes in non-uniform ways, i.e., with or without the corresponding counterparts. We show that in all cases we studied no EGRET source is expected.  相似文献

A study of the seismic hazard for the Northwestern Apennines, based on seismotectonic and seismicity data, is presented. Starting from a seismotectonic analysis, showing the complex structural evolution of the region, the seismic activity in the period 1000–1975 has been modeled by some seismic source zones justified by geostructural and seismological considerations. The recurrence statistical parameters and the attenuation laws have been determined for all these sources. With an appropriate analysis method, maps of seismic hazard for return periods of 50, 200, and 500 years were elaborated. Finally, a comparison with the map of maximum felt intensity and with hazard values calculated by a different approach is presented.  相似文献

Conventional methods for bacteriological testing of water quality take long periods of time to complete. This makes them inappropriate for a shipping industry that is attempting to comply with the International Maritime Organization's anticipated regulations for ballast water discharge. Flow cytometry for the analysis of marine and ship's ballast water is a comparatively fast and accurate method. Compared to a 5% standard error for flow cytometry analysis the standard methods of culturing and epifluorescence analysis have errors of 2-58% and 10-30%, respectively. Also, unlike culturing methods, flow cytometry is capable of detecting both non-viable and viable but non-culturable microorganisms which can still pose health risks. The great variability in both cell concentrations and microbial content for the samples tested is an indication of the difficulties facing microbial monitoring programmes. The concentration of microorganisms in the ballast tank was generally lower than in local seawater. The proportion of aerobic, microaerophilic, and facultative anaerobic microorganisms present appeared to be influenced by conditions in the ballast tank. The gradual creation of anaerobic conditions in a ballast tank could lead to the accumulation of facultative anaerobic microorganisms, which might represent a potential source of pathogenic species.  相似文献

In this work a coupling method for the characterisation of colloid‐mediated transport of the metal(loid) species in porous media was developed. For this transport experiments quartz sand was used as column packing material and the synthetic three‐layer clay mineral laponite as model colloid. The determination of colloids was conducted by means of UV detection. The quantification of the metal(loid) ions was carried out in two different ways: (1) The fractions collected at the column outlet were analysed with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP‐MS) (offline measurements); (2) the column system was directly coupled with ICP‐MS (online measurements). In the column experiments the influence of laponite colloids on the transport of Cu, Pb, Zn, Pt and As species was investigated. In the offline experiments as a consequence of dilution during sample preparation no metal(loid) species at the column outlet could be found. Unlike this the breakthrough of all metal(loid)s could be detected under the same experimental column conditions in the coupling experiments. This coupling technique offers the online detection of the metal species and colloidal particles with high resolution even at low concentrations and without any time‐consuming preparation. The coupling experiments have shown that the laponite particles accelerate the transport of the cationic metals. For anionic metal(loid) species no influence of laponite on their transport behaviour was found.  相似文献

The main driving force behind Al/Si ordering in tetrahedral framework aluminosilicates is nearest-neighbour Al/Al avoidance. Computer simulation is used to explore the direct consequences of such Al/Al avoidance. The main result is that the order-disorder transition temperature T c falls dramatically as the concentration x of Al in the structure is reduced, and if the only interactions are those associated with nearest-neighbour Al/Al avoidance, T c becomes zero for x less than some critical value x c , where x c =0.31 for the feldspar framework and x c =0.34 for cordierite. Also a large degree of short range order is found above T c . Both results differ radically from the standard Bragg-Williams model. Plots of entropy and enthalpy of ordering are given as functions of x and T, which may be used to interpret experimental data or for extrapolation into ranges of x and T inaccessible to experiment.
